Mahan Abedin puts the recent detention of four Iranian-American academics on spy charges in the broader context of US and Iranian intelligence-gathering operations. After being severely burned trying to recruit agents in the conventional manner, the Americans turned to “consultants”. But in doing so they blurred the distinction between spying and legitimate research.
