In Aristotle’s Politics, normative theorizing and empirical re-search go hand in hand. Yet contemporary theories of liberal de-mocracy express a demanding “Ought” that faces the sobering “Is” of ever more complex societies. Especially the deliberative model of democracy, which claims an epistemic dimension for the democ-ratic procedures of legitimation, appears to exemplify the widen-ing gap between normative and empirical approaches towards poli-tics.
